Subscriber Rules, Community Standards, and Terms of Participation
Please read, or you may lose your subscription to this Substack
Preamble
There have previously been no subscriber rules or terms of participation for this Substack because I never imagined they would be necessary. There are very few subscribers, engagement and commentary are vanishingly small, and Substack metrics indicate that only a tiny minority of subscribers actually read the articles. While I wish more readers commented, and I would welcome debates, discussions, criticisms, and corrections, this has, unsurprisingly, not happened.
I do not read, monitor, or participate in any social media, nor in any of the now-extant cryonics forums or use groups. Thus, I was surprised to learn from a subscriber that an article here was the subject of commentary on a prominent social media platform whose discourse norms are fundamentally incompatible with this publication’s objectives. This post resulted in a massive influx of 8 new subscribers to this Substack, something I consider highly undesirable.
No one did anything wrong, least of all the new subscribers. If there are no rules, none can be broken. What follows is the remedy to that situation.
Welcome
Welcome to this publication. The purpose of this forum is to encourage substantive, evidence-based discussion conducted in a civil and intellectually honest manner. Occasional irony and sarcasm are allowed, but should be infrequent, proportional, and, where not involving public persons, should not mention names. Participation in the comment sections, chat threads, and related subscriber interactions constitutes agreement with the following rules and standards.
Confidentiality and Non-Propagation Policy
This publication is intended to function as a small, private, and highly selective forum for serious discussion. It is not designed for mass dissemination, viral circulation, public controversy, or social-media engagement.
Accordingly, subscribers are strictly prohibited from:
Promoting this Substack on major social media platforms;
Publicly discussing its existence, membership, or subscriber community;
Posting screenshots, quotations, summaries, or paraphrases of articles or comments to social media;
Linking to this publication in public online discussions;
Using this publication as material for online disputes, call-outs, “signal boosting,” or audience cultivation.
This includes, but is not limited to:
X / Twitter
Reddit
Facebook
Instagram
TikTok
Bluesky
Discord servers
Public forums and discussion boards
YouTube commentary channels
Other engagement-amplification platforms
This publication explicitly rejects audience maximization, algorithmic engagement, and participation in the attention economy.
Subscribers who violate this policy will be permanently and irrevocably banned without warning or appeal.
The purpose of this rule is not secrecy for its own sake, but preservation of an environment conducive to candid, technically sophisticated, and low-noise discussion among a limited readership.
If you are seeking a public-facing ideological arena, activist platform, or social-media community, this publication is not intended for you.
Privacy and Confidentiality Policy
The privacy of subscribers will be respected to the fullest extent reasonably possible.
The moderator will not knowingly or deliberately disclose subscriber identities, email addresses, account information, private communications, or participation records to third parties except:
where required by applicable law;
pursuant to a valid court order, subpoena, or other legally compelled process;
or where disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the legal rights or safety of the publication or others.
Subscriber anonymity and discretion are regarded as important operating principles of this publication.
However, subscribers should understand that no digital or networked communications environment can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Participation in any online platform — including Substack, email systems, payment processors, cloud infrastructure, and associated digital services — inherently carries risks of unauthorized access, data compromise, interception, scraping, hacking, platform failure, or inadvertent disclosure.
Accordingly:
no absolute guarantee of confidentiality or anonymity can be made;
and the publication assumes no liability for disclosures arising from third-party compromise, platform vulnerabilities, governmental actions, malicious intrusion, user operational-security failures, or events beyond the moderator’s reasonable control.
The moderator will make good-faith, commercially reasonable efforts to safeguard subscriber privacy and minimize unnecessary exposure of subscriber information.
By participating in this publication, subscribers acknowledge and accept these inherent limitations and risks associated with electronic communication systems.
1. Purpose of the Forum
This publication exists to facilitate serious discussion, analysis, criticism, and inquiry. Strong disagreement is welcome; abuse, disruption, and bad-faith conduct are not.
The objective is not ideological conformity, but rigor, clarity, and productive exchange.
2. Standards of Conduct
Subscribers may not engage in:
Personal attacks, harassment, or intimidation
Threats of violence or unlawful conduct
Defamation or knowingly false allegations
Persistent bad-faith argumentation
Repetitive spamming, flooding, or derailment
Obscene, pornographic, or gratuitously graphic material
Hate speech
Doxxing or disclosure of private information
Impersonation of other individuals
Commercial advertising or solicitation without permission
Deliberate misinformation presented as fact
AI-generated comment spam or bot amplification
Criticism of ideas, institutions, research, and public figures is permitted. Abuse directed at individuals is not.
3. Evidence and Scientific Claims
Because many discussions here involve technical, scientific, medical, historical, or policy matters, subscribers are encouraged to:
Distinguish clearly between fact, inference, speculation, and opinion
Provide citations where feasible
Avoid presenting conjecture as established science
Correct factual errors when identified
Engage opposing arguments honestly and accurately
Extraordinary claims require proportionally strong evidence.
4. Civility and Intellectual Honesty
Subscribers are expected to:
Read before responding
Avoid quote-mining or deliberate misrepresentation
Respond to arguments rather than personalities
Acknowledge uncertainty where appropriate
Avoid rhetorical manipulation, trolling, or performative outrage
This publication values disagreement conducted in good faith.
5. Moderation Policy
Moderation decisions are made at the publisher’s sole discretion.
Comments or accounts may be edited, limited, muted, suspended, or permanently removed for violations of these standards, including patterns of disruptive conduct, even if no single comment independently warrants removal.
The publisher is under no obligation to provide warnings, explanations, or appeals procedures.
Repeated low-quality participation may result in removal, even in the absence of overt rule violations.
6. Medical, Scientific, and Technical Discussions
Nothing published here constitutes medical, legal, engineering, or financial advice unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Many topics discussed may involve experimental science, emerging technologies, historical analysis, or controversial hypotheses. Readers are responsible for exercising independent judgment and consulting qualified professionals where appropriate.
Subscribers must not advocate dangerous, unlawful, or reckless conduct.
7. Copyright and Use of Materials
Unless otherwise indicated:
Original written material remains the intellectual property of the author
Brief quotations with attribution are permitted
Reproduction of full articles without permission is prohibited
Subscriber comments remain attributable to their authors, but by posting, subscribers grant this publication the nonexclusive right to display, archive, and moderate submitted content
8. Privacy
Subscribers may not post private correspondence, unpublished personal communications, or identifying information about third parties without consent.
Attempts to harvest subscriber information or engage in off-platform harassment will result in immediate removal.
9. Financial Independence and Absence of Commercial Content
This publication does not accept paid subscriptions, advertising revenue, sponsored content, affiliate arrangements, promotional considerations, or any other form of remuneration connected to readership, engagement, or audience growth.
No articles, commentary, recommendations, or editorial positions presented here are influenced by advertisers, sponsors, commercial partnerships, monetization incentives, or audience-maximization considerations.
The absence of monetization is deliberate and is intended to preserve editorial independence, reduce incentive distortions, and minimize participation in the broader online attention economy.
This publication is maintained solely as a private intellectual venue for discussion, analysis, and archival writing.
10. Disclaimers
Views expressed by subscribers in comments do not necessarily reflect those of the publisher.
The publisher reserves the right to revise these rules and standards at any time without prior notice.
Continued participation after revisions constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
11. Moderation, Participation, and Claims of Censorship
Subscribers should understand that moderation decisions in this forum do not constitute censorship.
Censorship properly refers to the suppression of speech through state action, coercion, force, fraud, or comparable mechanisms that materially impair an individual’s ability to speak or publish. No such condition exists here.
This is a private forum operated primarily for the moderator’s intellectual interests and personal gratification. Participation is voluntary, conditional, and subject to the standards described herein.
Subscribers whose comments, arguments, viewpoints, or styles of participation are removed, restricted, or excluded remain entirely free to express those views elsewhere. Indeed, there exist innumerable public and private venues — including social media platforms, blogs, forums, publications, and personal websites — over which the moderator exercises neither control nor influence.
No subscriber possesses an inherent right to publication, amplification, audience access, or continued participation within this forum.
12. Final Principle
The central expectation here is simple:
Be rigorous. Be honest. Be civil. Contribute substance rather than noise.
Subscribers unable or unwilling to operate within these constraints should not participate.

Hi Mike, So I assume you'd rather I not "restack" your articles on my page, right? (It's Christine Gaspar)
Some feedback… I’m subscribed because I am interested in the high level topics that Mike writes about. His deep experience with cryonics means his views should be seriously considered. He was absent from public discussion for many years and his return is good to follow. The writing is typically remarkably information dense, and of topics I only vaguely understand. But I do get an overview of Mike’s interests by scanning his writing, and as I said, its mostly over my head for meaningful reply comments.
